In this unit I learned about teaching English to specialized groups. The first specialized group I learned about is beginners, of which there are several types. The absolute beginner is a student with no understanding of English whatsoever. The false beginner is a student who may have had some exposure to English but doesn't remember much of what they learned. The adult beginner is someone who has chosen to learn English and, as a result, is usually highly motivated. And lastly, the young beginner is usually a student who has not chosen to study English but has a faster learning potential than an adult beginner. Next, I learned about teaching individual students. Individual students often feel that one-on-one English instruction can focus more on their own individual needs rather than being part of a class or group of English learners. One-on-one lessons are usually less formal and the teacher can then often serve as an educational partner of the student. Teaching children, who are naturally curious, can be a very rewarding experience. Teachers should make classes fun for children, with various activities that move along at a good pace. The teacher should always try to relate the activities to the childrens' own interests. Utilizing patience, positive encouragement, and frequent praise the teacher can help build the child's self-esteem. And even though a child's attention span is much less than that of an adult, children still want to be appreciated for their efforts and will often seek teacher approval. Another area I studied about was teaching English to business people or ESP (English for Specific Purposes). A lot of business people need to learn English for their jobs. The backgrounds and ages of these clients (learners from a particular company) can vary immensely. Teaching these business clients can take place in a number of ways: one-on-one, in-company group, or as an in-school group. These groups may study intensively or over a longer period of time. Finally, I learned about teaching multilingual and monolingual classes. Teaching English to a multilingual class can be an advantage for the teacher as the students have no common language except for English. These students are usually studying in an English speaking country, allowing them to get more exposure to, and more opportunity to use English. Monolingual classes usually are situated in the students' home country. These students often have the same problems with English since they are all from the same country. But students having the same cultural background actually can help the teacher come up with topics that would interest the entire group.
