This unit has taught me about ways to troubleshoot common scenarios. For first lessons, course materials should not be used. Instead, the teacher should establish rapport with the students (and among the students if they are new to one another) and find out individual students' English language level, their interests and needs through engaging activities so as to plan the course and lessons accordingly. For large classes, the teacher should ensure his/her voice is loud enough, and board work visible from the back of the class. Pair/group work, choral practice and worksheets maximise each student's involvement. Teachers should discourage students from using their native language by ensuring instructions are understood by all and that the activities are not too difficult for the class level. Weaker students should be paired with stronger students, and the teacher may consider preparing more activities using the same material for the more advanced, or preparing different materials based on the same topic. Reluctant students can be encouraged to participate more through pair work, and sufficient controlled practice.
