Unit seven provided me with information on how to best structure lessons for grammar, vocabulary, and language functions. I learned that there are unique characteristics of each type of lesson that require different learning initiatives and goals in order for students to successfully acquire the new target skill. One specific thing I learned is that the frequency and coverage of a word, its teachability, its appropriacy for the students, and its appropriacy to the task or lesson are all important considerations when a word is being chosen (or not chosen) as the students' new vocabulary term. I think we all have a rough idea of these measures, but it is hard to empirically determine any of these. However, I think resources like the recommended Cobuild English Dictionary can be excellent references for determining the vocabulary terms included in the coursework. Luckily, teachers now have access to modern research by linguists, teachers, and others and this research can provide us with even more information on just "what" exactly young learners should be exposed to. Furthermore, I believe the ESA straight arrow, patchwork, and boomerang models do a good of showing "how" each of these language aspects can be effectively taught.
