This unit is about Teaching a New Language. Vocabulary, gram and functions are the basis of the lessons. Four things are required for students to be able to do with new language- no matter what the level or how the study phases are set... 1. Be exposed to it 2. Understand it’s meaning 3. Understand how it’s constructed 4. Be able to practice and produce it Teaching vocabulary. Receptive words are words that students know but don’t use. Productive words are words that students know and use. It’s is common for students to know more words than they use. Selecting vocabulary to teach involves choosing what is appropriate for the students; what is appropriate to the tasks they may do; how often they will come across it and use it; and how teachable it is. For vocabulary items students need to know the meaning; how and when it is appropriate use; grammar - where it belongs; how it interacts and affects other words; spelling and pronunciation. It is usually taught in the straight arrow format. Teaching grammatical structure. This basically determined by the level of the class. But always should include meaning, use of, grammatical form and how it is said/written. Example- written “I am going to...”. Spoken form “I’m gonna...” This structure most commonly taught by either the boomerang or patchwork styles. Teaching language functions. Includes appropriateness, in terms of formal, informal, tentative, technical etc. Usually taught using boomerang or patchwork methods. Lesson structure is a critical concept to the success of the lessons. Detailed outlines, examples, games, worksheets and scenarios must all be detailed in lesson planning.
