I feel like I "walked into" another dimension. I use phrases like "get off", "catch up with", etc., all the time. If I was not born into English, this would be almost as difficult as understanding irregular verbs. Much of these expressions make no sense if you are not familiar with their true meaning, much like slang.
I think this is teachable if one does not use too many, as recommended in the chapter. The teacher needs a constant planning and watchfulness, to help the student to become familiar with a limited number of phrasal verbs, with balanced use and drilling for the student. Phrasal verbs, from the teaching point of view, are something I have never even considered. So, thanks for a heads up to the authors of this chapter. tb
