This unit discussed the usage of coursebooks and other materials. While coursebooks are encouraged, created and authentic materials are recommended to be used in conjunction with them. Authentic materials consist of anything a native speaker can hear or read (newspapers, magazines, programs, songs, menus, etc.) Authentic materials are real which makes them more interesting to students. Created materials are generated by the teacher and can also be interesting to students. These materials can either replace or supplement what is in a coursebook. Some advantages of the coursebook are the material has been tried and tested and is easier to follow than creating an entire syllabus. But coursebooks can make a teacher lazy and in most cases, are not selected by the teacher. To develop a balanced lesson plan, teachers should use a combination of authentic and created materials along with a coursebook.
