There are several groups of students in TEFL classes. Beginners require clear and steady speech in order to prevent them from getting lost. It is also, however, important not to speak their native language, as this may discourage listening to the English spoken. Individual students can be very productive due to higher levels of motivation, but a different teaching dynamic will need to be acknowledged. Children tend to acquire languages faster than adults. Using games, songs, role-plays and choral exercises are an effective tool and keep them interested and keen to learn. Teaching English to professionals (Business English) demands a formal approach - at least initially until you find an acceptable method for the group. One does not require an understanding of their profession, but it can be helpful, (one should not show off should you know a thing or two about it) as one can elicit material by asking about their jobs. Multilingual class offer a similar advantage, as one can elicit material about the students' backgrounds thus encouraging student talk time.
