In this unit, I learned about a few different grammar principles. I learned about modal verbs, which modify the verb. They don't stand alone, and can suggest amount of certainty, ask permission, or indicate necessity or obligation. These modal verbs include words such as "should", "may", "must", or "can". In this unit I also learned about passive voice. This is something that is dying out in English but is still used when the subject is not known, not important, or emphasis is intended on the object. The last sentence I wrote contained passive voice. I also learned about clauses. Independent clauses can stand on their own as sentences. Dependent clauses cannot. Relative clauses modify a noun. These can be defining or not defining. The last grammar principle we went over in the unit was phrasal verbs. These are verbs with more than one word, and can be intransitive, transitive separable or transitive inseparable.
