Pronunciation is important but often overlooked by teachers. As a communication disorders major, this unit was something I am very familiar with and passionate about. English sentences can vary in meaning based on words stressed and prosody. Teaching students to recognize different emotions behind stressed words in sentences is a good way to help them understand meaning. IPA alphabet is a universal coding of sounds. Knowing the different places and manner of articulation can help students form the proper sounds. Many sounds used in English might not be used in the students' native language, so teaching them how to properly form new phonemes can be very useful. Native English speakers often combine words, drop letters, and change sounds based on coarticulation. Helping students both understand and adopt these spoken differences can help them communicate on a more native level.
