This unit discussed methods for evaluating students and how different types of tests can be used in different situations.
Placement tests will help determine what level a student is at. The questions are typically progressive, from easy to hard.
Diagnostic tests are given at the beginning of a course to determine a students current strengths and weaknesses. It can also tell you something about the student aptitude for learning.
Progress test test all 4 skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking). They can indicate areas where students are having problems and what they need to re-visit.
Practice test can be given to prepare students for mid-year and/or end-of-year final examinations, as well as prepare students for external exams.
External exams are those given to test a non-native English speakers level. There are a variety available, the Cambridge being one of the most commonly taken.
