Synopsis of the Unit 16 - Conditionals and Reported Speech This Unit’s material informed me about the detailed analysis of the 5 conditionals, reported speech and direct speech, verb tenses, time expressions etc. I learned how Zero conditional expresses facts and uses the present tense only, followed up by the first, second and third conditionals expressing certainties, possibilities and hypothetical stands which use different tenses; such as past, perfect, future and a mix of these in between forming the mixed conditional. Conditionals are important when it comes to speaking and expressing thoughts. When we want to be part of an ongoing dialogue and tell what is going on or what has happened when they action happened, we use the reported speech. Reported Speech changes. According pronouns, it might use all the pronounce depending on whom the speaker meant the action or the meaning. Time expressions in the other hand, change completely for e.g. Tomorrow becomes ‘the day after’ Today becomes ‘that day’ Yesterday becomes ‘the day before’ This is also used upon months weeks and years. I also learned on how to never use quotation marks in reported speech as we are not quoting the exact words spoken by the first speaker. Conditionals sometimes might be confusing and lead students to misuse of tenses in different conditionals- but with the exact diagrams I think it can be well explained in an easy way so the lesson about Conditionals and Reported Speech is straightforward.
