Synopsis of the Unit 15 – containing Evaluation and Testing. During this unit I learned the pros and (few cons) that evaluation of different forms brings in the classroom. For e.g. evaluation might appear in many different forms when it comes to learning and reflecting a Language. Tutorials and Evaluation by students are the less “strict” methods to reflect upon the class. Usually, tutorials are conducted by the teacher concluding all the students in the class, more often done in the ending/ end of Activate phase. Similarly the Evaluation by students is done in the free time after the class has finished and it is less conducted by the teacher. If the teacher does not evaluate the material, I think there is a slightly chance that the students do not have the right confidence and authenticity upon the language to evaluate and correct difficult encountering/ mistakes. This is why tests/ paper or oral evaluation by the teacher only, is more authentic and requires a more experienced hand. Tests are very different and vary from different situations. Some tests are taken prior to the course, some others through-out the course and some are taken in the end of the whole syllabus. E.g. Placement tests are taken prior to entering the course. Placement tests are used to measure the level of the students Speaking Writing Reading and Listening abilities so they can follow the rest of the class without occurring obstacles. A little different are the progress tests. The progress tests happen through out the whole period of the course, they are used to review and revise the learned material/language. Also, they are used to measure what lesson has been forgotten and remembered by the students. Other lists of testing methods: Practice tests And Diagnostic tests - Practice tests are leading forms of the external tests that are usually needed for more complex situations. For e.g. applying for College. Tests should include all the aspects of the language in details. They should exclusively contain the four skills of a language alongside with Grammar and Vocabulary. Very important. External Testing/Certifications/Language level evaluating and trainings might be: -TOEFL- Used mostly for US college admission applications -IELTS- used internationally for English speaking countries (from students whose native language is not English) -TOEIC – deriving from TOELF is it exclusively used by people who want to pursue work or professional career internationally and specifically in Japan and Korea. Becoming more popular in Europe. -Cambridge Assessment which includes various certificates courses and evaluations in general English and for many groups of people.
