In the last lesson, we cover some of the most common problems teachers face in the classroom. Here are the situations discussed in this lesson: - First lessons. These are extremely important for the teachers, as they are the first impression and the first opportunity to establish rapport in the classroom. It could be that the class is completely new, where students don't know each other, and the teacher needs to put an extra effort to motivate the students to interact. - Warmers. The beginning of a class can be difficult, especially if it is really early or late in the day, and the students are not motivated. This is why warmers are very important, as they get the students motivated, and can also be linked to the lesson itself. - Different levels. This is a complicated situation for both the teacher and the students, as the teacher will have to decide how they best organize the lesson to have all levels motivated and feeling included. - Large classes. This can be a challenge, as the teachers tries to include all students into the lesson. However, there are techniques, such as working in pairs, that can aid the situation and motivate the students. - Use of native language. It is important to always enforce speaking only in English. There will be some situations where students will make use of their native tongue, especially in monolingual classrooms, to explain something they don't feel comfortable with in English or to aid a weaker classmate understand. - Reluctant students. Especially when working with children, teachers will face students who are simply not motivated to learn or work. The teacher should carefully make use of activities or group work to try and get the other students to motivate those who are not. - Difficulties with listening skills. As with language level, there will also be a difference in the listening ability of a student. Once again, in order to not bore the more advanced students and have the class motivated, there are ways the teacher can assist the weaker students. The best method is to pre-teach the grammar that is related to the audio, so that the weaker students can identify it with ease.
