In Unit 19, we see a breakdown of different groups of people that teachers can face in a classroom. It is important to understand the different groups and how to prepare for them, as each group will have different needs and requirements. Below are the groups detailed in this lesson: - Beginners. This group includes a wide range of students beginning with a person who is learning he language for the first time, to a person who has already a bit of understanding, to an adult who is picking up the language again after years of not studying. Although this group may be intimidating, it is very rewarding to see how they develop. Therefore, the teacher should put a lot of effort into the lesson and prepare accordingly. - Individuals. These lessons are usually easier to prepare for the teacher, as there is only one student and there are no differences in levels or cultures. They do, however, make it impossible to perform some activities, and they require the teacher's full attention. - Young learners. This is also a very rewarding group to teach, as you see how children are excited to learn new things. It is also a difficult group to teach since children require a lot of attention and variety during the lessons to keep their attention. It is important to be clear, brief and to keep your composure at all times. - Business. When teaching companies, one of the biggest intimidating factors is not having any knowledge of the work that is being done at the company. However, this should not impede the teacher from being able to carry out the lessons. It is important to analyze the needs of both the business and the students. As there may be a wide range of ages in the company, there may also be a wide range of levels. This can complicate the deliverance of the lesson, as you try to accommodate it to all levels and ages. - Monolingual & multilingual. Both of these groups have advantages. The monolingual class usually come from the same country and culture. Therefore, it will be easier to create topics or situations that all students understand. The multilingual, on the other hand, have the advantage that they don´t speak the same language, making English the common factor.
