Phonology is used to understand the meaning of what is being said using the physical properties of sound such as stress, rhythm, intonation and the International Phonetic Alphabet. Intonation is the variation in volume and pitch in a whole sentence and stress is focused on a single word. When it comes to stress, the stresses are in the syllables not single vowels nor consonants. The intonation of the sentence lets the listener know if they should reply yet or not at all. It also differentiates a statement from a question. Intonation also lets the listener read the mood of the speaker. The Phonemic Alphabet is used for speaking not so much spelling or reading.
