I teach English to Koreans in Korea. A country that uses TOEIC scores for practically everything from college entrance, hiring, promotions, etc. As such, learners are conditioned to prepare for tests and are baffled when asked what their motivations or goals are when they aren't preparing for an exam.
On the other hand, it is far easier to persuade my students to take progress tests and they seem to genuinely enjoy seeing progress, albeit on paper. How is it different in other countries and cultures?
