Practicing reported sentences offer language learners an immense opportunity to learn colloquial-conversational English in a comfortable setting. The practice itself is akin to injecting a learner into a conversation that is able to move at a speed that is most comfortable for that learner.
The practices provided in the unit, and the unit test, had me speaking aloud. When I was asked to identify the correct reported sentence, I would read the provided direct speech sentence aloud to myself. Then I would read the each reported sentence. Using speech, rather than doing my work silently, I, as a native speaker, was able to quickly identify outlier sentences and select what I thought was the correct answer.
For non-native speakers, these conversations will provide students an opportunity to practice identifying correct forms of reported sentences/direct speech sentences while attuning their conversational skills.
In a higher level classroom, in order to preserve either American, British, etc... modes of speaking, a teacher would be able to employ this basic model while adding more colloquial forms of English speaking. Thus, students are able to practice forms, and learn how to interact with English on a more personal level.
