This unit deals with the various types of evaluation tools, from diagnostic and placement tests, to in-class progress tests, to external tests. It is understood that tests are necessary by universities, businesses, and governments to measure a student's (or employee's or prospective citizen's) level of competence, especially compared to others. An important part of preparation for external exams is the practice, which should mimic the form and process of the real exam, as these tests are high-stakes affairs for the test taker. As far as course-related tests are concerned, they are given before the course, during the course, and at the end; they can yield important information about the student's level of competence and progress at every stage of the course. An important testing clearing house is the Cambridge Assessment program, which handles testing for academic institutions and business concerns especially in the UK. Its scoring rubric for the ESOL and Cambridge International Exams is linked to the broader European Framework of References for Languages (A1 through C2)
