The chapter discusses the materials usually involved in a course book; advantages and disadvantages of course books; how to best use a course book; and how to analyze a course book (if one can select one). The chapter also discusses the use of teacher-created materials as well as authentic ("real-life") materials. Throughout the chapter, emphasis is placed on the strengths and weaknesses of each source of materials. The keys: vary the sources of materials (never use only one), depending on the needs, interests, and level of the students in your class. I particularly realize that a rich source of materials is the internet--and the text provides three specific sites.
