Speaking and writing are the two "productive" skills. In teaching speaking, teachers must create the interest and need for students to participate, through well-planned activities that include both accuracy activities (usually in the Study phase of the lesson) and fluency activities (usually in the Activate phase). If using drills during a controlled activity, the teacher should use the "3 x 3" technique. The text pointed out reasons students may be reluctant to speak in class and provided techniques to encourage interaction. Guidelines were presented for a free/creative speaking activity--divided into times to use each action (before, during, & after the activity. A critical point: don't over-correct and don't correct every time a mistake is made. Glaring recurring mistakes made by an individual can be addressed privately with the student--and maybe extra practice can be scheduled; glaring recurring mistakes y groups or the entire class can be addressed to the entire group or class in a later lesson. Factors to be considered in teaching writing skills are handwriting, spelling, layout and punctuation, and creative writing--as first languages may differ greatly from English. Games are not just to take up time or make planning easier; they can be valuable tools in a lesson. And students usually enjoy them.
