Planning is key to keeping the class (both teacher and students) on track and headed in the right direction. It documents the teaching and learning process and history. It gives continuity to the learning process by making sure the relevant skills and information are taught, in the right order. The chapter explored the functions of a lesson plan, what a plan should contain, how to be organized enough to successfully and efficiently carry out the plan (a good plan is useless if it's not executed properly), how to do a self-evaluation of a plan, and how to organize a sequence of lessons. A sample lesson plan and a sample self-evaluation form are provided. A critical point about lesson plans: flexibility! Follow the plan, but don't be a slave to it: be ready to adapt the plans both during instruction and from one lesson to another. I disagree with the text in one area; that is, that in contriving a sequence of lessons, the teacher should make sure that all skills are included and given equal treatment. I believe some skills are more important than others, so the time and effort dedicated should be related to the skill's importance in the overall scheme of language learning.
