This unit touches such complex grammatical structures as conditional sentences and reported speech.
Conditional sentences consist of the main clause and the if-clause. There are five types of conditional sentences:
0 conditional - if present/present
1st conditional - if Present/will
2nd conditional - if Past simple/would
3rd conditional - if Past perfect/would have+past participle
Mixed conditional - if Past Perfect/would
Some typical mistakes are confusion in opting a proper conditional and using modal verbs Will and Would in the if-clause.
Reported speech is another common issue among English learners. The main rules to remember are backshifting when reporting someone's words, replacing pronouns and time expressions in order to preserve the initial information of the speaker accurately.
