This unit explains the main idea of evaluating students' progress and levels. Tests are usually divided into following types: placement test is used to form groups or classes of similar language level; diagnostic test provides information about students' knowledge by the moment they are going to start the course; progress test is carried out periodically in order to monitor students' progress; practice test is used to find out students' preparedness before taking exams or an achievement test; external examinations and proficiency tests are taken to measure the level of proficiency in a language. These tests are often a requirement for study, employment, immigration, etc.
