This unit gives some basic rules about modal verbs, passive and active voice, and phrasal verbs. Modal verbs are used before other verbs and they add meaning to the main verb. Modal verbs are: can, could, may, might, will, should, would, must, shall, need to, needn’t to, have to, have got to, ought to. They can express obligation, possibility, probability, permission, prohibition, ability, advice. When teaching this topic it is useful and interesting to make students play in roles, creating rules or guessing the meanings of traffic signs. Another interesting and important topic is passive voice. When studying this topic students can practice by telling stories and turning active voice into passive. This unit also gives some information about relative clauses and phrasal verbs which are really important parts of English grammar.
