Knowledge, motivation, participation, and empowerment are the keys to solid teaching skills. As a role model, the instructor must obviously have a firm knowledge of the material, as he/she is often the only person from whom the student receives information on the subject. Yet a "smart" teacher must not only command the topic, but be able to motivate the students to learn in the class and beyond. This includes class participation from all students, creative methods to maintain class attention, gentle correction of errors without embarrassing the pupil, and empowering the student to continue to learn the subject after the course has ended. The student, for his/her part, will hopefully be open to learning new material in a different method than he/she had previously experienced in his/her academic life. The student should also not fear failure but rather accept errors as part of the learning experience.
