It is quite important to remember that you are teaching language to your students and need to take into consideration their interests, what they know, what they want to know and etc. Saying in general choose materials that will motivate the students, build the interest before reading and/or listening, and of course, pre-teaching complex vocabulary or structures if necessary. Have various topics that will teach different skills and create comprehensible tasks that will not make it difficult for the students to do the task.
