In Unit 2: Theories, Methods, and Techniques, we are taught a variety of English teaching methodologies. Each method brings with its own inherit strengths, but also flaws. Therefore, your selection must be based on both your own and student’s personalities, as well as a student’s areas of expertise and weakness.
Despite their differences, each methodology shares one common aspect: the usage of ESA (Engage, Study, and Activate). There are many different ways of incorporating ESA into your teaching methodology (Patchwork, Straight-Arrow, and Boomerang), and thus a teacher must experiment and plan based on the proposed lessons content.
Lastly, this unit covers the importance on proper feedback and correction. Not every stage of ESA demands for complete correction, and instead, sometimes your student should be allowed to experiment and “free-flow”. However, in other stages, a teacher should be more willing to correct his or her student when grave errors are being made.
