The first lesson was very hard to watch, I felt very uncomfortable for the students. The teacher came in without any introduction or warm up he just went straight into the lesson (if it could be called a lesson). He also kept repeating the same term “necessary” but it was obvious the students were not familiar with that term as it is a higher-level concept and the teacher should have used simpler terms or synonyms to help the students understand. But he just kept going and never really explained any of the terms he was using in simple, understandable language. He was also quite rude to the students in the first lesson often just saying they were wrong. Also, in the activate phase where he had them form two lines made no sense at all and there was no point to the exercise. If I was a student in the first class I would’ve been very frustrated and would not have even known how to take notes on the lesson. By contrast the second lesson was very effective. The teacher introduced himself and made a point to go around the room and have all the students make intros too before starting an effective engage phase. He used the board very effectively and gave many example sentences for the students to take notes. The students were very engaged as he made a point to call on everyone at random and the study phase and final activate stage were also very effective. Overall the second lesson was miles above the first one. If it wasn’t the same teacher and students for both, I would have thought the first lesson was taught by a very new teacher who did not like teaching. But after seeing the second lesson it is clear the teacher is a very effective English as a foreign language teacher.
