This unit definitely introduced a different way to look at reading and understanding. Because you can understand words as their dictionary definition but then get completely stuck when reading in context. I think a really good distinction was made regarding doing some pre teaching of vocabulary but at the same time not getting stuck on understanding every word and learning to figure out from the rest of the text what is going on and starting lower level students with text that is made for language learners before introducing authentic text which will not take into account how cultural differences can play into a students understanding of a text. The topics used for reading can also be really important insofar as a student might be more or less engaged if they feel they can relate to or care about what they are reading so they will be more or less motivated to figure out a word that they do not understand.
