Both listening and reading are important aspects of learning and comprehending a new language. Some reading and listening may be for pleasure such as listening to a CD of your favorite artist, or reading an entertaining novel. Other types of reading and listening may have a very specific purpose, such as reading instructions on how to make a bowl of pasta, or watching a news report about the weather forecast for the week. Both are equally important in the process of language building and understanding. For this reason it is important to not focus on just one, but rather find ways to incorporate all of them into lesson planning.
