It is important to be aware of your students progress throughout the course. You want to make sure you are strengthening their weaknesses and advancing their knowledge. You don't want to move to fast or move to slow. A way to help teachers know where their students are at is through tutorials, evaluation by students, and tests. These three things can help the teacher determine the lesson plan. The one that is used more often is testing. Tests are used to distinguish the level the student is at, how much the student understands, how the student is doing, and how much a student already knows. I personally think that standardized testing isn't an accurate way to determine how much a student knows for a couple reasons: the student may have memorized the information but not truly understand it and the student does understand the content but doesn't test well. However, standardized tests are largely used, therefore required, in majority of schools to score a students knowledge on a subject. I do think that it is important to test the students so you know where they are at in understanding the content of the lesson. I like the idea of evaluation by the students. This encourages students to talk openly and honestly about what they know, what they hope to learn, and what they need more help on.
