I learnt that it is not important to have a course book in the first lesson, the first lesson's purpose is to know your student, check their level and be able to plan for future lessons. This made a huge impact to me because I don't want to seem intimidated or not sure what I'm doing in the classroom, so a general questionnaire or discussion can ease the tension and set a tone for the class. Warmers are also vital to get students in the mood or introduce them to the topic rather than a serious grammar exercise, an English class must be and interesting for students.
