Evaluating students language abilities is important for many reasons. Before someone signs up for a class, they will likely need to take a Placement test to ensure they are at a class level appropriate to progress their learning. Throughout a class there will likely be some Diagnostic and Progress tests to ensure the teacher is in sync with the average class level as well as identify a grade if the school requires it. If your intention of taking the class is to pass a certain language certification test, there will likely be practice tests given periodically so students can dial in their studying efforts.
