In this Unit, I learned about the importance of testing and the different types of testing available. Before even taking a class, students usually take a placement examination which detects their level of English and determines which class they should be in. Once being placed, students will then take a diagnostic exam which determines what the students do and don't know and will help the teacher plan future lessons.
Once learning, students will then be given progress tests to evaluate their progress. These can be formal (a written exam) or informal (a group activity or game), but typically the school will require some type of formal examination. Progress testing is helpful in letting teachers know how well their students are learning and what areas need more focus.
There are also external examinations that students can take to determine their level of English and/or gain certificates in the English language that are recognized in universities and places of work (some examples include Cambridge assessments, TEOFL, and TOEIC).
