This unit reviewed the importance of lesson planning in order to ensure smooth running lessons, guiding yourself through the lessons, keeping yourself focused, and keeping record of your past lessons. There is no formal way to write a lesson plan, but some basic principles are to keep it simple, be aware of anticipated times, make activities flow, and keep it flexible. Being flexible is important as you can never predict how a lesson will go - students may require more or less time on a learning point o activity than you assumed. Thus, be able to flow through the lessons and anticipate any changes will make the lessons go smoothly. Organization is an important skill that will ensure your lessons run smoothly. By making sure all of your materials and aids are available and working, the classroom is cleaned, and seating arranged, then you will be ready to face your class as the students start to come in. While writing a lesson plan, it is important to include a number of things, like learning objectives, personal aims, the language point, anticipated problems, the procedure, etc. A lesson plan should outline your lesson - what you want the students to achieve when the class is over, what the theme of the lesson is, what procedures you will use to achieve the learning objective, any anticipated problems and their solutions, and any other organizational items that will help you remain on task. Staying flexible is key in lesson planning, as stated above. I believe that by having thorough lesson plans for each and every lesson, teachers can expect their classes to run as smoothly as possible. By keeping track of lessons and taking notes on planning, a teacher can look for ways to improve his/her teaching. In planning a sequence of lessons, much of the same procedures apply as in planning a single lesson. However, certain issues need to be considered. Flexibility - if one lesson does not go as planned, the others must be altered accordingly. Goals - by building goals into the lessons, like end of the weeks tests, students can have something to work towards and efficient ways to check their learning. Revision - lesson content should be continually reviewed to ensure students have a complete understanding of the material. Variety and Balance - lessons should be fun with a good variety of activities.
