In this unit I have learned about the intricate relationship between teacher and learner. In order to be a good teacher, one must have positive personality traits (patience, kindness, caring, empathy, etc.) as well as being able to effectively foster good interactions with students through feedback, equal involvement of all students, and lending help when necessary. In short, a good teacher should care about their teaching in order to maintain a well-run classroom, but their students and learning should be the most important thing to a teacher. I also learned about the various roles of both teachers and students. The roles of teacher range from manager to participant, but the mark of a good teacher is the ability to transition between each role smoothly. For example, say a teacher starts their day as the Controller by standing up in front of the class and reading a short excerpt from a text book. Then, they would switch to the role of Organizer by directing the students into groups in order to perform an activity based off of the lesson they just read from the text book. It is important that students are fully engaged in this activity, so then the teacher would start to role of Observer, walking around the classroom and paying attention the progress of each group, but not engaging with the students in order for them to fully learn from the task. Then a student raises a hand and the teacher must become the Tutor in order to help the student with the question. After the students have completed the tasks and handed in the papers, the teacher then must become the Assessor and provide feedback to the progress of each group. A teacher that can change swiftly and smoothly between these roles and always be perceptive to the demands of their students is a good teacher. Good students are just as important as good teachers in a successful classroom. A good student is someone who has motivation to learn, a desire to experiment, a willingness to ask questions, an ability to think about their own learning process, and an acceptance of error correction. A teacher should encourage and foster these characteristics in all students. There are many aspects that go into determining the character of a student, such as age, learning experience, culture, motivation, language level, and so on. A good teacher will be perceptive to the varying issues and personalities of their students and will be able to encourage students based on their individual needs. In conclusion, the relationship between a teacher and student is complex. However, a teacher that is motivated, caring, and enthusiastic is much more likely to have students that are successful.
