This unit discussed the receptive skills, reading and listening. The different motivations for reading and listening were covered, as well as how we actually read and listen depending on purpose, pre-existing knowledge, etc. The different problems that can arise with students learning a new language for both receptive skills were discussed. Listening in particular can present problems because the flow of information is continuous and cannot be referenced again. Several solutions to avoid these problems were provided. Some of these were pre-teaching difficult vocabulary, choosing interesting and varied topics, and carefully selecting texts for reading (especially when they are authentic). An example patchwork receptive skills lesson with detailed ideas and information was also provided for review.
