This unit highlighted the importance of incorporating different types of supplementary materials to enhance the learning experience of the students. Knowing the different types of materials, namely authentic and created materials, is helpful when I need to decide what type of materials to use for different objectives. If I perceive the students to be at a stage where they need an extra boost to their confidence, using authentic material may be encouraging, provided I facilitate appropriate activities for their language level. If the lessons seem to be getting dull and need to be spiced up, perhaps some fun games from created materials may help bring up the motivation levels.
This unit has also provided very practical advice regarding selection of course books if there comes a time for me to be deciding which books to use. Other information about how the content of the books can be used to maximise the potential of the book for the class is also beneficial, such as assessing what can be omitted, replaced, supplemented or adapted for different classroom situations.
