I feel that I have learned why it is so important to give certain test at the beginning, during and prior to a students learning. Before a student starts an ESL class, they should take a placement test and diagnostic tests for the teacher can better place that student in the proper class and see students level of learning. It is evident that the teacher evaluate his/her students’ progress throughout a course, where they need work and if they are learning the material taught by the teacher. Progress tests will help the teacher determine if the students’ are advancing. Practice tests can be given periodically to help prepare for an external exam e.g. TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC as well as the Cambridge exams. If the students decide they can also take the Business English exams which will be required by companies and business to assess in different languages where needed. Overall, no matter where live takes a new student of ESL, they will be put through a series of evaluations, exams and tests needed to succeed in life.
