I must admit that in my teaching career, so far, I have neglected teaching pronunciation in a very scientific manner as described in this unit because my knowledge of lingustics is sketchy. Sometimes, students do have questions relating to word stress and quite honestly I'm often at a loss as to how to answer such questions. Thankfully, I have never been expected to know the phonetic alphabet so far, and I think with the advent of electronic and online dictionaries which will often give an aural demonstration of correct pronunciation, maybe this is less important these days.
