In order to assess their students’ skills, teachers give tests. There are many different kinds of tests that can be given, depending on the purpose and the timing. Unit 15 discusses these various tests, as well as external tests that students of English often take. The first kind of test is often given before the class even starts. The placement test allows for teachers to see the proficiency level of their future students, and have a better understanding of what level class they should take. This test can also allow for teachers to properly balance groups with both weak and strong students. The next kind of test can be given to students right at the start of the class. A diagnostic test can give a teacher a better understanding of the specific strengths and weaknesses of their class. Depending on the results of the diagnostic test, the teacher can adjust the course material to spend more time on what students are having problems with, and less time on what all students seem to already understand well. Throughout the course, students should take progress tests. These assess students’ comprehension and retention of the course materials. Each progress test should only include the material that was just covered in the class. If students do poorly on a progress test, it shows the teacher that they should review the material again before going on to new topics. The last common test that students take are practice tests. These tests are the same format and style as other external examinations that students want to take the future. This allows students to get a feel for the format of the test as well as the types of questions that are usually on the specific test they want to take. While some teachers disagree with formal testing, it is a straightforward and uniform way to gauge a student’s language ability and competency. Throughout the course, the teacher can give their students various different kinds of tests (such as diagnostic or progress tests), as well as practice tests for external examinations. Many students want to receive progress indicators of their increasing language abilities, which can easily be done through various testing methods.
