Unit 14 was about course books and lesson materials. I learned that there are authentic materials that can be programs, magazines, newspapers, songs, poems, brochures, menus, films on video and more. They are real and more interesting and motivating to students. Students gain confidence when they understand the material. There are also created materials that are designed by the teacher to replace or supplement materials from a course book. They can be crosswords, word search puzzles, role-play cards, flashcards, gap fill activities or picture stories.The unit also discussed the advantages and disadvantages of using published course books. It is best to use course books with the options of omitting certain lessons, replacing certain unsuitable material, supplementing with extra material to reinforce a skill or extend it and adapt the course book use in his/her own way and style.
