It was very powerful to view both lessons and actually see first hand a good and a bad lesson. In the first lesson, the teacher did not teach the students during the engage part of the lesson. He did not have them participate, He also was not encouraging and condescending to the students putting them down. Students were very confused and he did not review what they had to do on the worksheet. When he reviewed it, he really didn't go over the answers. In contrast, in the second lesson, the teacher engaged the students by telling them his name and asking each of them to tell their name. He write and taught what the language structures they would be learning that day. He reviewed it and game many opportunities to practice creating a sentence and question using the same language structure. Students had opportunities to work in pairs, he had them play a game and went over the results encouraging and complimenting them. He finished the lesson by going over what they had learned during the lesson. The attitude of the teacher makes a huge difference in setting the tone in the class and helps students feel comfortable.
