In this unit, I learned a few things about how to start the first lesson, how to work with students of different level, how to effectively teach a large class, and how to keep students from using their native language in class. In the first lesson, it is in the teacher's best interest to use "warmers". These are necessary to build rapport and create a positive learning environment. Students of different levels can be taught in the same class, and there are techniques that can be used to help further their learning experience. For example, they can be paired, they can be broken into two groups with the same material but different tasks, they can use different materials, or they can progress on their own without the involvement of the teacher. A large class is something a teacher will probably have to teach at one point in their career. Some things that can be done to make sure that all students participate is group work, worksheets, group leaders, and dynamics in which the teacher listens to student ideas to create an involved class. The use of native language is something that students will do for a variety of reasons. The best ways to keep them from doing this is to only answer them when they ask in English, constant reminders to speak English, use of appropriate level activities, and making sure to give clear instruction.
