This unit was concerned about the different teaching techniques for different learners? groups as they could be beginners, children, individuals or expertise.
Teaching beginners can be very enjoyable and energetic as they start from the beginning. However, it could be very stressful as well if a correct way of teaching is not applied with the lesson.
Beginners can be categorized as the absolute beginner, false beginner, adult beginner, young beginner and beginner without Roman alphabet. Adult beginners may be easier to teach as they are encouraged by themselves. However, young beginner might be easier to pick up new languages.
Beginners can be inspired by not over correcting them, not using course book all the time, being sensitive to students, responding nicely, having friendly and supportive environment, focusing on easy method of teaching and so on.
Teaching individual students encourage the student to learn as he will get an opportunity to focus on the lesson where they are weak. It is good to behave as a friend of the individual student and exchange telephone numbers for unplanned changes in the class. Moreover, it is important to prepare the lesson as the individual students' interest and relevant to their specific language problems. Short stories, Quizzes, Taboo words, Listening, Goal Oriented Activities, Pronunciation Practice, Postcards are some f the appropriate 1-1 activities.
It could be the one of the most rewarding of all as the children are motivated by their own curiosity about learning new things. Use of clear and higher pitch, repetition and positive responses to them even it?s a mistake can encourage them to focus on study. Children always seek an appreciation and attention for their work by teachers. So, the teacher?s role in the class is very important and sensitive. Controlling children in the classroom can be very difficult as they are very active and energetic in their age. However, there could be few problems among these students due to following reasons:
- Personal problem from outside or home, are not controllable by teachers, better to report the administration of the school
- Try to give attention to students who seeks it by making them a leader of the classroom
- Try to make lesson fun, varied and interesting to participate
Teaching Business Students or Other profession
A new teacher may feel fear to teach these students in the initial stage as he/she may not be the expertise of the students? profession. However, teachers need to keep in mind that they are here to teach English language even they are well known about the work field of students but the knowledge can be used to make the lesson effective. One to one, in company group and in-school group are three different ways of this teaching that can be held.
The clients sometime might not be influenced to learn as they might have been forced by the company to attend the class. The company?s relationship with their employees can be also one of the motivation factor for the clients.
Before beginning the class, the teachers should have a general understanding of their clients? jobs and recognize what their clients aim to achieve through the class.
Needs Analysis is the next phase that a teacher has to follow up to get an idea of the clients? level. A Need Negotiation session be held in the first day lesson plan so, the teacher can understand more about their clients? needs of learning English.
A draft planning should be prepared and distributed to all clients. However, this draft is flexible schedule and will need extra needs as the course goes on.
Mid course evaluation should be carried out on the halfway of the course. It enables teacher to find out the progress of the students and their feedback.
Authentic materials are very useful for teaching in this field as a student is also a source of authentic material on his/her own. Clients own work record as letters, faxes, invoice, company reports can be used as practice materials.
Followings points should be considered in teaching specialists of the specific work field:
- Before joining the teaching class, the teacher should find out about the company as much as they can
- Always remember that we are expert in teaching English language. Teachers should not try to impress clients with their knowledge of their field
- Be over prepared on the first day, be punctual, use formal language and establish a good relationship with other employees
- During the course, keep a record of own work, attendance, lesson cancelled and any problems. Never gossip about other employees with one another.
- After the course, the teacher will need to prepare a post course report. Companies normally have a high expectation and that?s why they are usually ready to pay more.
The monolingual and the multilingual class
Multilingual students have an advantage of using English with other students in and out of the classroom as they all are probably from different countries. However, monolingual also has its own advantage of making teacher easier to identify the interesting and suitable materials for his/her students as they all are from the same country and probably have similar culture and thoughts.
