The zero conditional refers to irrefutable facts, if/when + present tense, present tense; the first conditional refers to situations where the consequence is possible/probable/ certain if the condition is met if + present simple + will; second conditional refers to an unreal/unlikely past situation and an unlikely future consequence; if + past simple + would + base verb form; third conditional refers to a hypothetical past situation /action (non action) and a hypothetical past consequence - if + past perfect + modal + past participle; mixed conditional refers to a hypothetical past situation and a hypothetical present consequence; if + past perfect, would + base form; also direct and reported speech, a lesson that is prone to confusion and errors by students due to the various verb tense, pronoun, time expression changes that need to be made, and must be taught slowly
