This section taught me about the changes in grammar during conditional phrases and during reported speech. Conditionals are two-clause sentences that refer to past, present, and future possibilities. One clause usually explains the condition that must be met before the other clause explains the consequence if the condition was met. Zero conditional phrases refer to irrefutable facts. First conditional phrases refer to a real situation in the future that will have a certain consequence if met. The second conditional refers to a present or future hypothetical situation that isn't true and a consequence that is also unlikely to be true. The third conditional phrase explains a hypothetical past action that would have had a certain consequence (but since the condition was never met, then the consequence is also nonexistent). The mixed conditional phrase refers to a hypothetical past action and describes the certain outcome. Direct speech is real conversation that can be put in quotation marks when written in text. Reported speech describes the action of telling someone what someone else said. When you tell someone what someone else said, the grammar changes based on the context. In reported speech, the question word (when, where, how, etc.) stays the same but the form of the verb changes into the positive form and the question mark is omitted.
