Back then when I was still studying Japanese, I was using a course book as was suggested by my professor. The use of course book had a good impact on me as it made my language study as it provided me a guided learning and I cam personally track my development. There was also a sense of security since the textbook has been tried and tested. However, I do agree when it was mention that a course book can be boring because it is very predictable.
When I was teaching English part-time in Japan, I created my own discussion materials by using authentic materials, such as newsprints and videos. Writing my own lesson plan while choosing the what topics to discuss was really challenging for me who has been used to course book drills and discussions. I also had to consider if the topic I choose can attract the interest of my student. As it was not tested, I also had to be very careful on how I present my lesson to make the content understandable.
