In this unit, I learned about the activities I could use for my first lesson, warmers, about what to do when we have students of different levels in the classroom, about large classes, the use of native language, reluctant students, and difficulties with listening text. One particular part of this lesson that grabbed my attention was the use of native language in the classroom. When I was an ESL student, even though our class was a multilingual class, there were groups of students that represented 1 or 2 countries (I was part of one of the groups). So we loved speaking to each other in our native language. I used to hate when our teacher would tell us not to use our native language. But at that time, I was very young and I didn't understand the purpose of just speaking English. I did however improve my English dramatically once I started going to classes where there were only English speakers. But it was only until then that I understood why our ESL teacher told us not to use our native language. I feel it is important for teacher to clarify the reasons why they tell their students not to use their native language. In my case I have my own experience and I am planning to use it as an example of why it is so important to just use English in the classroom. I think that way, the students won't think I am just being mean by not letting them speak in their own language. Specially if they are young students.
