This unit is about modals, phrasal verbs and passive voice. At the begginin g let`s pay attention to modals. The modals (modal auxiliary verbs) are : can, could, may, might, shall, should, will, would, must, have to, have got to, need to and etc. What for can we use all these verbs? They are used to give additional meaning to verbs. Let`s point out all these meanings. They are: obligation, ability, advice, prohition/ permission , possibility/probability. As from the point of view of grammar the do not change according to person. Also modal verbs can express different degree of formality. Can I borrow your pen? compare May I stay here? As for the teaching ideas for modals. They can be role plays, shor dialogues and etc. The next one is passive voice. As it was said there are two voices in English language they are active and passive voice. What`s the main difference? The ,main difference is in focus. As for the active voice the focus is on the doer of the action, who performs the action. As for the passive voice the doer of the action is not in focus. Let`s compare: I painted the door last week. The door was painted last week. The first one the doer is in focus, the next one the doer is not in focus. Now let`s have a closer look at the form. In both passive and active voice the tense of the sentence remains the same. In the passive voice the tense is indicated by the auxiliary verb “to be” in the active voice , the tense is shown by the main verb. The passive voice can be used with by when we need or want to know the doer of the action. The book was written by Oscar Wild. As for the teaching ideas for passive voice transfer sentences to passive voice. The next part of this unit is devoted to relative clauses. But what does it mean ? There are three main types of clauses: independent (that is a complete sentence), dependent (it`s not a complete sentence , it should be connected to an independent clause), relative clause (it`s dependent and modifies a noun). A rule relative clause is introduced by a relative pronoun: who, whose, that , whom and etc. Respertively realative clauses devide into two groups: definite and non-definite. This is doctor who lives next to me. I lost a book you gave, but still have one. The next part is devoted to phrasel verbs. Phrasal verbs consist of a verb plus one or two particles. But still operate as one. Turn off that lamp ! As a ule phrasal verbs are quite complicate theme for students. There`s nothing to be afraid of! It takes time and affort. Becaue the particle changes the meaning of the verb. They just need to be learned and used correctly. This unit is great! Thank you ITTT!
